Far too often we see trainers who will only offer a basic 9am till 6pm support period (maybe later on certain days) with very little availability over the weekend. Look for training with help available at any time you choose (irrespective of whether it's the wee hours on Sunday morning!) Make sure it's always 24x7 direct access to mentors and instructors, and not simply some messaging service that means you're constantly waiting for a call-back when it's convenient for them.

Be on the lookout for providers that have multiple support offices active in different time-zones. These should be integrated to give a single entry point together with 24x7 access, when you need it, with no fuss. Never make do with a lower level of service. Direct-access round-the-clock support is the only way to go with IT learning. Maybe burning the midnight-oil is not your thing; often though, we're working during the provided support period.

Don't put too much store, as many people do, on the training course itself. Training for training's sake is generally pointless; you should be geared towards the actual job at the end of it. Focus on the end-goal. Imagine training for just one year and then end up doing the job for 20 years. Don't make the error of opting for what may seem to be an 'interesting' training program only to waste your life away with something you don't even enjoy!

Spend some time thinking about the income level you aspire to and how ambitious you are. Often, this changes what particular certifications you will need and how much effort you'll have to give in return. Prior to embarking on a particular study course, it makes sense to chat over the specific career requirements with an experienced industry professional, to be absolutely sure the study course covers all that is required.

Ensure all your exams are commercially valid and current - you're wasting your time with courses which provide certificates that are worthless because they're 'in-house'. Only nationally recognised qualifications from the likes of Microsoft, Adobe, Cisco and CompTIA will mean anything to employers.

Be sure to ask for testing modules so you can check your comprehension at all times. Simulated or practice exams will help to boost your attitude - then you're much more at ease with the real thing.
